mentoring for artists

Navigate

Our ‘Navigate’ program provides mentoring for disabled dance artists who want to develop their practice and artistic potential.

We provide bespoke support and space for individual dancers to self-direct their creative and professional development. We draw on our networks and resources to nurture a community of regional practitioners and create opportunities to platform work and share experiences.

We believe that disabled and neurodiverse dancers in Norfolk should have better access to excellent training and professional development opportunities that celebrate and activate the immense creativity in our region.

sami coggins

dance artist

Sami is an emerging artist who trained in Hip hop and break dancing when she was abled bodied. Since becoming a wheelchair user Sami has started to explore contemporary dance and now considers herself as a contemporary dance artist. Sami describes herself as shy but finds her confidence when she dances.

‘I first got involved in Compass Dance during lockdown. This really helped to bring me out of my shell. I was always worried about what other people think about me, but since meeting Gaelin and Rosa I feel I am over coming this through dance. They invited me back to come to help out on there latest project and they mentored me to do a solo in the performance. I was very nervous to do this but they gave me so much confidence. I felt alive when I was dancing. I really enjoyed helping all the other young people to achieve there up most out of the sessions and the performance.’

alicia gooch

dance artist

Alicia is a highly passionate community dance artist based in Norfolk who delivers uplifting movement sessions for people of all ages and experiences.

They discovered dance through the unconventional route of a local wellness group at aged 18, and found the premise and benefits of mindful movement so profound that, over the following 5 years continued to explore this practice and finally arrived at the University of Suffolk. They achieved a First Class Dance Degree, building a plethora of skills and networks of incredible people and organisations to connect, share and grow with.

A sense of a communal holding and uplifting of one another’s explorations and journeys is at the core of their practice, facilitating the opportunity for as many people as possible to explore -and perhaps reclaim- their right and ability to dance and move as they feel compelled to, in a playfully curious and supportive environment.

‘Being mentored by Rosa and Gaelin is paramount to my development as an early stage community dance artist, trying to establish my own practice. Their kind and nurturing qualities are exactly what I need to feel comfortable taking first steps. Their extensive knowledge and experiences between them will be highly beneficial to learn from. Specifically, their focus on helping provide opportunities for adults with disabilities, will give me with invaluable experiences and insights into this topic as a key branch of my developing practice.’
